Hunter High School Admissions: your questions, answered

From 5th-grade qualifying scores to the 6th-grade entrance exam, here is what families need to know about applying for 7th grade at Hunter College High School.

updates its requirements by admission year. This guide covers the application for Fall 2027 seventh-grade entry. The 2027 exam format has not yet been confirmed; wherever we discuss exam sections, we label the January 2026 format as a reference.

01 / ELIGIBILITY

Who can apply?

Eligibility & Scores

Who is eligible for Hunter College High School’s seventh-grade entrance exam?

A student must be in sixth grade during the application year (or meet Hunter’s homeschool requirements), live full time in one of New York City’s five boroughs as their primary residence as of September 1, 2026, and meet Hunter’s qualifying score rule. Hunter enrolls new students in 7th grade only. Families who meet the standard criteria do not need an invitation letter to apply.

What NYS test scores qualify a student for the January 2027 exam?

For students who took the Spring 2026 5th-grade NYS exams, Hunter requires at least:

ELA: 478

Math: 497

Each score must meet its own minimum; a higher result in one subject cannot offset a lower result in the other. Check your 3-digit scores at https://www.schoolsaccount.nyc/

What if my child’s school did not administer the NYS exams?

Hunter accepts specified fifth-grade school-administered tests, including ERB CTP 5, ITBS, TerraNova 3, and Stanford 10, with scores at or above the 90th national percentile in both Reading and Math. The approved test and subtests matter. If the child also took the NYS exams, Hunter uses the NYS results. ISEE, SSAT, NWEA MAP, iReady, and ERB Milestones are not qualifying substitutes for this cycle.

If the school administered no approved fifth-grade exam, follow Hunter’s “No Scores” approval pathway before registering for another test. A sixth-grade test taken without Hunter’s prior approval will not qualify the student.

My child narrowly missed the cutoff. Is there another pathway?

Possibly. Hunter’s Academic Insights Profile (AIP) is for students near the standard threshold. For Spring 2026 NYS scores, the AIP minimum is 474 ELA and 491 Math; on approved non-NYS exams it is the 85th percentile in both subjects. AIP applicants must also meet the grade and residency rules. Hunter reviews AIP applications after the regular application period and may invite some students to test if space remains. An invitation is not guaranteed.

03 / ENTRANCE EXAM

What should students expect?

What was on the most recently described Hunter entrance exam?

The January 2026 exam used two booklets totaling 185 minutes. The English booklet allowed 110 minutes for 50 reading comprehension questions and a writing assignment. The math booklet allowed 75 minutes for 37 quantitative reasoning questions and 47 mathematics achievement questions. Hunter developed the English content; the math sections used licensed Middle Level ISEE content. Hunter’s 2026 sample questions illustrate question types and are not past Hunter exams.

Is the Hunter exam the same as taking the ISEE?

No. The January 2026 Hunter math booklet included licensed content from the Middle Level ISEE, but the Hunter entrance exam was a separate exam with Hunter-developed English sections. Taking the ISEE did not replace the Hunter entrance exam. Separately, an ISEE score is not accepted as an eligibility test for the Fall 2027 admission cycle. Those are two different uses of the term “ISEE.”

Format status: Hunter has published the January 2026 exam format for general reference and explicitly says its components may change for January 2027. The figures below describe 2026 only; consult Hunter’s exam page for a 2027 update.

Exam Format

What reading and math skills are worth practicing?

Hunter’s published 2026 examples emphasize understanding, interpreting, and analyzing passages; math reasoning and quantitative comparisons; and curriculum-based math such as computation, geometry, graphs, and multi-step problems. Useful practice includes explaining why an answer follows from a passage or a calculation, then applying that skill under timed conditions. Specific topics and timing for the January 2027 exam should be confirmed when Hunter publishes them.

What does Hunter look for in the writing assignment?

For January 2026, Hunter described an essay or short creative piece of up to two pages that lets students express ideas clearly, effectively, and with appropriate detail. It did not publish a fixed five-paragraph formula or the scoring rubric claimed by some prep sites. A student should practice answering the actual prompt, developing concrete details, and revising for clarity and accuracy within the available time.

How are exam results used? Is there a target raw score?

In Hunter’s description of the January 2026 process, multiple-choice answers were scored first and a year-specific cutoff was set; a portion of students then had their writing evaluated by readers who did not know their identities. Hunter says the cutoff varies, does not publish student scores or tell families whether an essay advanced to review, and does not re-score exams. A claim such as “42/50 reading and 70/84 math guarantees essay review” is therefore not an official Hunter benchmark.

How many students take the exam, and what is the acceptance rate?

Hunter describes admission as selective, but its current admissions pages do not publish a verified annual test-taker count or a single acceptance rate for the upcoming cycle. Estimates circulating online can mix applicants, eligible applicants, test takers, offers, and enrolled students. We would not use a precise percentage to predict an individual child’s chance. Hunter does maintain a waitlist, and its exam FAQ explains that final decisions depend on the test and writing review.

04 / PREPARATION

How should a family prepare?

Should a 5th grader prepare differently from a sixth grader?

Yes. A 5th grader’s first milestone is building strong reading and math skills and meeting the qualifying scores on the school’s approved tests. An eligible sixth grader can shift toward the entrance exam: close reading across different texts, mathematical reasoning and fluency, flexible writing, and pacing. Because Hunter may change the 2027 exam format, use its official sample materials as a starting point and adjust when the school publishes updates.

What does thoughtful exam preparation look like?

Begin with a timed baseline to see where the student loses accuracy or time. Review missed questions for their underlying reasoning, not just the right answer; practice writing to varied prompts; then revisit those skills in short, timed sets. The goal is to help students read carefully, solve unfamiliar problems, and communicate their thinking under pressure. No program can guarantee admission.

For families who want structured support, Talent Prep Academy’s Hunter High School prep program offers small-group and individual options focused on reading, math, writing, timed practice, and personalized feedback. The program also has a G5 pathway for students working toward eligibility.
